Yup, that’s coffee sitting pretty on my windowsill. After our recent falling out, I’ve decided to invite my dear old friend back into my life.
But notably, IT’S DECAF.
A happy compromise.

Sunny Saturday breakfast: Red River Cereal, a scoop of plain Chobani, half a pink lady apple, and a sprinkle of raw sunflower seeds. Lemon water and hot cinnamon tea on the side. Heaven? Yup, pretty much.

It’s been about a week now since I’ve been completely coffee-free. Don’t get me wrong, it has NOT been easy, but it does get better every day. The physical withdrawals were brutal; and the thought of going through that experience all over again is reason enough to keep me away.

I’ve been drinking lots of tea. A tiny bit of black and a lot of rooibos and herbal. My tea and spice closet overflowith with choices and I like to mix it up.

I prefer loose tea over bagged by far, and my favorite is Canadian-based David’s Tea. They have a dizzying selection of teas available to order online and you can also find David’s Tea Shops across Canada (and rumor has it that they’re opening a store in San Francisco!). I seriously love David’s. It has made my switch from coffee to tea not only bearable, but truly enjoyable as well.

Letting go of coffee has certainly had its challenges. The free coffee stand at Trader Joe’s is painfully tempting and I have moments where I miss my coffee buzz so much my body cries out for caffeine. Alas, I know the coffee aggravates my pitta and doesn’t agree with my constitution in general. So for my health’s sake, this is the right thing to do.

One thing that has really helped is working out. Seriously. (I probably would have slapped myself for saying this a few months ago, geez it sounds so obnoxious.) I’ve been basking in a daily dose of exercise endorphins. After a workout, I feel like I’ve had 10 cups of coffee and I can’t stop smiling. Endorphins are powerful! And a steadfast ally in my fight against caffeine.

All that said, I do miss coffee sometimes. But I’m happy to report I’m muddling through. It’s certainly a process, but between the tea and the exercise I think my addiction is finally broken. Coffee will always hold a special place in my heart but our parting is for the best. Adieu le café, Adieu.
